When is the best time to fish in Puerto Rico?
There isn’t one best month for every angler. Puerto Rico fishes year-round; the better question is which species and style of fishing line up with your travel dates.
The short answer
Puerto Rico offers offshore and inshore fishing through the year. Species activity changes by season, water conditions, bait and current.
Best strategy: choose your dates, identify the fish you care about most, then ask the captain what has actually been biting.
Winter: December–February
Cooler-season trolling is often associated with wahoo around Puerto Rico’s west and southwest waters, while reef and bottom fishing remain useful options.
Spring: March–May
Spring can bring mahi opportunities and continued offshore variety as water and bait patterns shift.
Summer: June–August
Warm-season offshore patterns increase the relevance of billfish planning, while tuna and mahi can still play a role.
Fall: September–November
Fall can bridge billfish patterns into the start of cooler-season wahoo activity. Weather deserves extra attention during Atlantic hurricane season.
What if your vacation dates are already fixed?
Tell Captain Frank when you will be in Puerto Rico and whether your priority is big-game trolling, steady action, family friendliness or a particular fish.
